Public Works Technician

Job Description

Performing maintenance and repair tasks on the town’s infrastructure, including streets, water and wastewater facilities and systems, sidewalks, drainage systems, parks, and other public facilities, which may include operating heavy equipment, cleaning debris, patching potholes, mowing grass, and installing street signs, all while ensuring the safety and functionality of public spaces for community use, requiring physical labor and knowledge of construction and maintenance procedures. 

Key responsibilities may include:

• Street maintenance: Patching potholes, sweeping streets, removing debris and trash

• Drainage system maintenance: Cleaning catch basins, clearing culverts, cleaning ditches, repairing drainage pipes 

• Park maintenance: Mowing lawns, trimming shrubs, maintaining playground equipment, removing litter 

• Snow removal: Operating snowplows, salting roads during winter weather 

• Operating heavy equipment: Operating dump trucks, tractors, loaders, backhoes, mowers, street sweepers 

• Water/Wastewater System Maintenance: Pumping septic tanks, installing water meters, maintaining sewer lift stations, and the towns wells and water tower

• Responding to emergency situations: Addressing issues like flooding, tree damage 

Required skills and qualifications:

• Physical ability to perform manual labor and lift heavy objects

• Basic mechanical skills to operate and maintain equipment

• Knowledge of construction and maintenance procedures

• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions

• Valid driver's license and ability to operate a manual transmission

• Understanding of safety regulations and procedures
